During his opening speech, Secretary General Donny Ermawan T. stated that ASEAN has made progress in economic growth, social development, and stability, but still faces contemporary global security challenges, such as cybersecurity, interstate conflicts, and the growing threats of terrorism as well as climate change. The Indo-Pacific Region can harness the blue economy for sustainable growth, but illegal fishing, overfishing, and pollution threaten ocean ecosystems.

These challenges demand constant attention and cooperation among ASEAN member states and partners. Therefore, the 20th ASPC addressed regional and global security challenges, regional cooperation to support the blue economy, climate change mitigation, and mutual trust building for peace, prosperity and security.
